Being a cantor is different from being a performer.  Many performers draw the attention of the people to the performers, but the cantor draws the attention of the people to God, the Creator of everything—of humans, of their voice, and of music.

Cantors are members of the assembly.  Members of the assembly focus their attention on the texts and actions of the Mass in order to participate well and to take full advantage of the gift of Christ.  Cantors also focus their attention on the whole of the Mass.  They participate throughout, even in the parts that do not directly involve their voice.  They call to mind their sins.  They listen attentively to the readings.  During the Eucharistic Prayer, they join their hearts and thoughts to the words spoken (or sung) by the priest.  When cantors participate well, they become a model for the rest of the community of Christ.  Cantors have a lot to manage during Mass, but if they can participate in everything, they give hope and guidance to the other worshipers in the room.  

Preparation and effective communication is the key.  With ample preparation, the cantor’s role can appear effortless, allowing for full participation in the liturgy and enabling the congregation to follow suit.  Without preparation, the cantor can become distracted and is less able to guide the congregation through the liturgy.
